In communications, a modular,
computer-controlled, digital switching system
used in telephone exchanges. System X was
originally developed by the UK companies GEC,
Plessey, and STC at the request of the Post
Office, beginning 1969. A prototype exchange
was finally commissioned 1978, and the system
launched 1980. STC left the consortium in
1982.
